I have to assume that my little casebook meets a need in the field because it's in its third edition. With each new edition, I've added and deleted cases in order to be responsive to changes in the counselors' working environment. In the second edition, I replaced five long-term therapy cases with ones that illustrated brief counseling strategies. Prevailing economic conditions favored short-term interventions, as they still do. In this third edition, I've replaced three private practice cases with ones set in schools. The new cases deal with major problem areas, such as sexual abuse, addictions, dual diagnoses, seriously dysfunctional families, and foster care. School counselors tell me that these are the kinds of cases that they are seeing. The sum is a balanced set of case studies that reflect today's practice in school, agency, and private practice settings.

I think it's significant that several contributors chose case studies from their early days of training and supervised practice. Some have included supervisors as coauthors. This should encourage those of us who train counselors. Those debriefing sessions with a supportive mentor, confronting personal issues, and even the tedious requirement to transcribe dialog have a powerful cumulative effect on the emerging therapist.

This is a hard book to organize because each case is idiosyncratic. It would be nice if I could pigeonhole each case as illustrative of a single counseling method, but real-life cases just don't work that way, so I've simply put them in order of client age.

There's a summary chart (following the table of contents) that allows an at-a-glance comparison of the 16 cases. For example, the reader will see that Suzanne M. Hobson, an elementary-school counselor, employs child-centered therapy to treat a 4-year-old boy suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder resulting from physical and sexual abuse.

Each case is organized as follows:

Introduction. The initial paragraphs lay out the presenting problem and background information about the client. The reader should know that in every case the identities of clients have been disguised. (This section is not titled.)

Conceptualization. Here the author discusses therapeutic goals and strategies. The author may justify the use of a specific theoretical orientation, such as Adlerian, systems, cognitive, behavioral. A rationale for diagnosis is also discussed.

Process. Actual client contacts are described. What happened in the sessions? How did the therapist's relationship with the client change over time?

Outcome. The author describes the results, for better or worse. I did not ask authors to present their most successful cases. I was after the cases that touched them.

Discussion. With the benefit of hindsight, the author explains what he or she might have done differently. In addition, the author describes personal and professional growth that resulted from this encounter with a troubled youngster.

Authors have provided their e-mail addresses (see "Biographical Statements") and have assured me that they would love to hear from readers. Take them up on it and get in touch.

I anticipate that readers will develop strong feelings about these cases. At the risk of waxing eloquent, I think this book beats with the pulse of living psychotherapy.

What an awesome book!

Each case study in this book is told by the treating therapist/counselor/social worker/psychiatrist. They describe and critique their most challenging case in dealing with an adolescent. The problems addressed in the cases are varied and range from moderate to severe. We are using this book in a graduate-level counseling course to analyze each case and come up with alternative treatment methods than those that were used. This text gives a deep, in-depth look into the work and feelings of a therapist and their most memorable adolescent client. Highly recommend!

Excellent vignettes! Chap by Chap summary here

This book is an outstanding series of vignettes (there! I used that word) but is unbalanced in that nothing positive is described. But it's good to read, like modern crime non-fiction.

Some 'favorites':

Introduction: Miss Russia 1996 is killed being at wrong place, wrong time when Russian Mafia bump off her benefactor.

Chap 1: On the Kursk, and Russian cover-up

Chap 2: Ryazan incident. WORTH THE PRICE OF THE BOOK. This is a spectacular chapter. I won't spoil it with spoilers but the circumstantial evidence is very strong that the Russian FSB (like FBI) basically planted bombs in 1999 to justify a second invasion of Chechyna. But I will give one spoiler: the Duma, on a pro-Kremlin party block vote, voted to seal the Ryazan incident and all materials used for the next 75 years and forbade an investigation of what really happened. The official explanation (which defies logic): 'The FSB was conducting an unannounced training exercise involving non-explosive materials with civilians as the target, and were caught by mistake by the local Ryazan police. The local police, despite having state of the art bomb detecting equipment and many hours of defusing actual bombs, misdiagnosed the material used in the training exercise as hexogen; in fact it was sugar. The FSB attempted to flee the area undetected after the bomb was found in accordance with training procedures, to see if they could escape" Do you think this would fly with the American people? But having visited Russia I can assure you--it works in Russia because nobody short of a suicidal or brave journalist wants to know. Patriot Games with a vengence.

Chap 3- Gaidar/Chubais and the Young Reformers. Not that interesting since better done in other books.

Chap 4 - The History of Reform - " "

Chap 5 - The Gold Seekers - on the MMM pyramid scheme and the guy that got away (senatorial immunity)

Chap 6 - The Workers--how they get shafted after management buys out their factory at 1/1000th market value in a rigged auction and then offshores the capital (leaving the factory running at a technical loss). Better covered by Klebnikov's "Godfather of the Kremlin"

Chap 7 - Law Enforcement - where crooks are cops

Chap 8 - Organized Crime - a lovely tale about two stubborn Canadians who wanted to open an ex-pat bar in Moscow. They did, after becoming managers for rival mafia gangs. But ironically they love it. Typical foreigner in Russia mindset--they love the great sex and excitement of Eastern Europe.

Chap 9 - Ulyanovsk - hunger strike claims a victim

Chap 10 - Vladivostok - the mayor, who for once is a decent person loved by the population (which generally backs anybody with power), is run out of town by a mafia.

Chap 11 - Krasnoyarsk - the infamous aluminum factory run by convicted gangster Bykov and his friends (some still on Forbes Richest 400 Russians list, and all under 40 years old, some under 30). Value add, Russian style. Read this to see what it costs to convict a mafiya member in Russia--a lot of innocent people have to first die, even die testifying. And our friend Bykov? He'll be eligible for parole soon.

Chap 12 - The value of human life - zero. Some case studies including surgery without lights (patient died); falling into a boiling hot water sinkhole (not uncommon since Moscow uses hot water to heat buildings, in fact, happens every other year). Boy and father trying to rescue him both die--slow agonizing deaths "4th degree burns". Woman trying to find her soldier son's corpse in Chechyna finds cadavers routinely appear to be mistakenly identified and buried under wrong name.

Chap 13 - Criminalization of Consciousness - on the Uralmash criminal gang, and how free beer and candy won over the hearts of the populace. Typical Russian tactic. Gang got elected to power.

Life in Russia pales by comparison with Western standards

A very well-documented book, which I think it had to be in order to convince someone like me (a California native) that life is so poor for 75% of Russians. Not poor as in "my rent just went up and the refridgerator is on the blink" but poor as in close to death, as in you collapse at work from no food and no medicine and you haven't received a paycheck in over 4 months even though you have this job and do it well.
I had no idea the quality of life is so poor there, that the establishment really protects itself, and the cops are more likely to shake you down for a bribe than arrest a crook who stole from you. Further, most all the government assets were, I'm struggling for words here, turned into cash for the corrupt people who were running them before the fall of communism. Everything the countrymen worked their lives for to build up was converted into cash, given to those with connections, and massive debt was then given back to the countrymen.
In closing, a very dark book. Perhaps a foreshadowing of what is to come in Iraq.

Excellent Source

Coming from the background of a dancer and Bachelor of Science in kinesiology, I found that this book was an excellent source to further combine and enhance my knowledge in both of these fields. Presently, I am in a graduate dance program and assisting with Bartenieff Fundamentals. This book works perfectly for any Bartenieff Fundamentals, Experiential Anatomy, Technique, and/or Pedagogy course. It is easy to read, and I can quickly find simple and beneficial exercises to use in the classroom and to prepare my body for dance and daily life.

THIS IS A WONDERFULL BOOK.

I study integration in Tai Chi and found this book full of good information to supplement my knowledge, I also do body work and this will be helpfull in that also. I would like to see the author do a workbook without the ancedotes and have larger pages and with pictures as an aid. I will possibly do a later review as I am still mastering the material, Northern Wu Tai Chi could add some integration ideas which I may detail later as I am not prepared at the moment. I bought this book taking a chance and was happily rewarded. I am adding some information to this review, for those interested in body integration from an eastern point of view, the core of Tai Chi I recommend "Warriors of Stillness" by Jan Depiersloot.

add another dimension to any movement

This book makes any movement--whether it be yoga, Pilates or just walking down the street--better understood and the analogies to how one carries one's self in the world and relates is interesting. It is also very well written and easy to follow. I like it because I came to Pilates etc from being more of an athlete... this can make anyone feel like a dancer and can lend to the practice of any movement, even by athletes!! (You will also see that what some of your teachers in whatever mind-body discipline you are studying might not be attributing to Bartinieff/Laban are well just that!)

About the Author
Kathy Blackwell, B. Mus. (Hons.), LTCL, LGSM, studied music at Edinburgh University and continued with post-graduate studies in music at the University of Oxford. Kathy is a string teacher with many years experience of teaching violin and viola. She developed her teaching ideas at the coalface in both Music Services and in private practice, working with groups large and small and in one-to-one lessons. She was a strings consultant for the ABRSM Music Medals initiative, a new assessment specifically designed for students taught in groups, and a contributor to the accompanying book All together! Teaching Music in Groups (ABRSM, 2004). Her teaching experience has led her to co-author Fiddle, Viola, and Cello Time, published by Oxford University Press, with her husband, David. Kathy and David have presented workshops in the UK, Australia, Hong Kong, and Singapore. David Blackwell studied music at Edinburgh University, after which he pursued a career in music publishing, first at ABRSM and then at Oxford University Press. He is co-editor of OUP's In the Mood: 17 Jazz Classics for Choirs and Carols for Choirs 5, and has published a number of single choral arrangements. He is co-writer with his wife Kathy of OUP's award-winning string series, Fiddle, Viola, Cello Time, and String Time, which have twice won the MIA award for Best Educational Publication. He now works as a freelance music editor, composer and arranger.

Excellent book!!

I just used this book for the first time tonight and I LOVE IT!!! I'm a 30-something year old, and just picked up a violin a few weeks ago. I've been trying to take lessons on YouTube... there are some great videos there to get you started, but I felt like I needed some books. I sounded bad before, but when you play with the CD it sounds pretty darn decent. Much better than screeching along like a dying cat with no accompaniment. LOL! I'll be buying more of the Fiddle Time books for sure. :)

New and Improved Edition

As I said about the first edition, my students who have used this book when they start lessons readily learn to read music. Just don't write the fingering in the book. They will pick it up quickly because of how the tunes are written. The only difference I've noticed in this book is that the duets that the student plays with the teacher have been printed so that the student's part is on the top line. The kids love the funny pictures and the tunes. You can't go wrong with this book.

Best Sight Reading Book!

I've been teaching violin for over 15 years and this is the absolute best book to use when helping students learn to read notes. The pacing and organization of the material is perfect. The tunes are interesting and fun. The illustrations and CD are appealing to students. My students usually take between 1-2 years to complete the book as we are using it as a supplement to their Suzuki Book 1 or 2. Great for all ages but particularly good for ages 6-10. By the time they have completed the book, my students are all reading notes with confidence on all four strings.

Simple and Brutal

If you've ever been stuck for workout ideas, or are looking for that extra challenge then this book will deliver.
The majority of workouts listed here use minimal equipment and basic movements, but are incredibly challenging.
It's not fancy, and there are no gimmicks, but you can be sure that these will work.

Easy to follow, highly-effective conditioning work

Book includes simple, fast, and highly effective cardio workouts that are the perfect companion for any strength training program. I use these workouts along with the Greyskull LP program to maintain my cardio, but they can really be used with any weight-training routine. Each workout includes detailed instructions, with pictures, so you don't have to guess about anything. With these workouts, you will be amazed with how much you can get done in ten minutes. Highly-recommended.

Worth the money. Lots of great, badass workouts. Some of the writing can be chessy or hokey if you're not use to Johnny Pain. But personally I enjoy the guys tone. He always comes off like the guy in the trenches with you. Not the fitness guru who sounds like theyve never done their own workout.

Practically everything you ever wanted to know about writing systems from a linguistic perspective is in this book. Pick a language; it's in there. I originally purchased this book for its coverage of Chinese script, but you'll get everything from Linear B to Cherokee.
