About the Author
Dr. Qureshi is professor of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Radiology at University of Minnesota. He has written over 530 scientific publications in prestigious journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Archives of Internal Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, Neurology, American Journal of Medicine, and Circulation. In addition, he has made over 1300 presentations in various national and international meetings. He has served as an invited speaker at numerous national and international forums. He has also been invited as visiting professor to universities in the United States and abroad. He is the editor of several textbooks and serves on editorial boards for several peer-review journals. He is the principal investigator of a large multinational clinical trial funded by National Institutes of Health. He laid the foundation of the Zeenat Qureshi Institutes in several countries. Since its inauguration, the institutes have led the way in cutting edge research in epidemiology, clinical trials, and basic research.

It was refreshing to read a book that provides a comprehensive and well-written exploration of ebola disease from its historic and genetic origins through the multi-faceted impact of its recent epidemic without trying to sensationalize the topic. It is factual, thoroughly researched, well-organized, adequately succinct, and suitable for use in topical medical studies. Its excellent information base will be especially useful to health professionals when combined with related journal publications and ongoing updates to what is known about ebola disease and other epidemics. The everyday reader and book clubs will also find this book to be approachable, though, and interesting as a basis for discussion. The author takes a rational approach, reviewing the personal experiences of his research team, front-line health care providers, survivors, and families and has touched on social reactions, economic impact, and hope as they relate to ebola disease. Frank in addressing social reactions, the author explores the origins for these and asks how society and medical systems alike can be less reactive, more productive, and more caring when approaching a devastating epidemic.
