About the Author
James R. Evans is a professor in the Department of Operations, Business Analytics, and Information Systems in the Lindner College of Business at the University of Cincinnati. His served as president of the Decision Sciences Institute 1997-1998 and 11 years on the Board of Examiners and Panel of Judges for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. He has been editor of the Quality Management Journal, published by the American Society for Quality, and served on editorial boards of numerous other journals. Dr. Evans has published more than 90 refereed papers and more than 30 editions of books. During the annual Quality Congress in May 2004, the American Society for Quality presented Dr. Evans and co-author Bill Lindsay with the Philip B. Crosby Medal for writing THE MANAGEMENT AND CONTROL OF QUALITY, 6E. The Crosby medal was presented "for authoring a distinguished book contributing significantly to the extension of the philosophy and application of the principles, methods, and techniques of quality management."

William M. Lindsay is Professor Emeritus of Management at Northern Kentucky University. In addition to coauthoring eight editions of MANAGING FOR QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE EXCELLENCE (including predecessors), he is the coauthor of TOTAL QUALITY AND ORGANIZATION DEVELOPMENT. He served as an examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for four years, as a judge for the Kentucky Quality Award for five years, and as a judge for the Seasongood Innovation Awards for the city of Cincinnati for three years. He is a senior member and past president of the Cincinnati Chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers, past president of the Cincinnati Chapter of the Association for Quality and Participation, and a member of the American Society for Quality, in addition to other professional organizations. Dr. Lindsay continues to teach MBA courses in quality management and project management. He serves as a board member of CLASP, a local nonprofit after-school program for elementary-age children, and is an active volunteer at his church. He earned a BSIE from the Georgia Institute of Technology, an MS in engineering from the University of Cincinnati, and an MBA and Ph.D. from Georgia State University.

This covers the general history of quality assurance, especially in the last 100 years, and does a good job of presenting numerous case studies with often recent examples in manufacturing and services. Used as a textbook in classes, it is also an excellent reference book.

Do not buy the Kindle version if you can help it.

While I'm interested in the subject and the book is good, the format is terrible in ways that while I'll try to describe, I won't be able to fully express. On the kindle for pc if I scroll my mouse wheel it moves down 1. A nice, smooth big roll of the wheel? 1. Then the end of the page comes like a wall, taking extra effort to move to the next page.

Reading on my kindle is no better. You can't change the pages like you would with a normal book. To read the pages at all I have to resize every single page, again and again.

With this book I will learn some things about quality, but my big take away will be to never order a Cengage eTextbook. In fact, I'll never take or encourage anyone to take a class in which they can't buy a used cengage book.

In short, I'm spending more time fighting changing pages than absorbing knowledge. I have never been so disappointed with a book in my life. Were I rating this book solely on content it would rate much higher, but as it is, I must give it one star. Ironic that many of the points in this textbook apply to the situation I've found myself in. My expectations were not met, and there is no mechanism for even the slightest satisfaction. I regret that as this is a digital version, I cannot burn it.

OK, we needed this for a Post Grad class. If you taken many, the choices of material is set. This book is not really bad, but it is not mind blowing either. If you have never had any quality or PE training, then this is maybe a better book. From my perspective it is a little low for a grad class.

About the Author
Haroon Khalid has an academic background in Anthropology from the Lahore University of Management and Sciences (LUMS). He has been a travel writer and freelance journalist since 2008, travelling extensively around Pakistan, documenting its historical and cultural heritage. He has written for several newspapers and magazines, including The News, Express Tribune, The Friday Times, Scroll and Himal and is also the author of A White Trail: A Journey Into the Heart of Pakistan's Religious Minorities. Born and raised in Lahore he now lives in Islamabad with his wife and works as an educationist. This is his second book.

This autobiographical work was written by one of the country's most well-known Native American women, Sarah Winnemucca. She was a Paiute princess and a major figure in the history of Nevada; her tribe still resides primarily in the state. She managed to record the Native American viewpoint of whites settling the West, told in a language that was not her own and by a woman during the time when even white women were not allowed to vote. Sarah Winnemucca dedicated her life to improving the living and social conditions for her people. She gave more than 400 speeches across the United States and Europe to gain support for the Paiutes. She died of tuberculosis in 1891. Life Among the Piutes was originally published in 1883.

About the Author
Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins (1841–1891) was notable for being the first Native American woman known to secure a copyright and to publish in the English language. She was also known by her married name, Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins, under which she was published. Her book, Life Among the Paiutes: Their Wrongs and Claims, is an autobiographical account of her people during their first forty years of contact with explorers and settlers. Sarah was a person of two worlds. At the time of her birth her people had only very limited contact with Euro-Americans; however she spent much of her adult life in white society. Like many people of two worlds, she may be judged harshly in both contexts. Many Paiutes view her as a collaborator who helped the U.S. Army kill her people. Modern historians view her book as an important primary source, but one that is deliberately misleading in many instances. Despite this, Sarah has recently received much positive attention for her activism. She was inducted into the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame in 1993, and in 2005 a statue of her by sculptor Benjamin Victor was added to the National Statuary Hall Collection in the U.S. Capitol.

From the True Perspective of a Native American

This book is a little difficult to read and understand at times due to the archaic language, but is definitely a worthy read. It tells the story you never learned in your history class in school. From the beginning legend of how the Native Americans became estranged from their White Brothers who were banished across the seas to the Paiute Elder telling everyone to rejoice in the return of the White Brothers is fascinating yet heartbreaking. We all know it didn't turn out so well for the Native Americans. In reading Sarah's story, which is written from the heart, it is easy to see how the Native Americans were exploited, treated as less than human and moved around like pawns to suit the white man's interest. I have the utmost respect for Sarah and her courage to speak up for her people. I also have the greatest respect for those who have followed, speaking her truths. Wake up people, we are on the wrong track. Bless you Sarah Winnemucca for your wonderful book and your attempts to make things right!

Life Among the Paiutes

I read Winnemucca's autobiography for a Native American History class at University and found it to be excellently written! She was such a powerful role model for Indian women during the time and was greatly respected for her role in the Indian community! Although some feminists may critique her for not standing up for her people at some points in her life, her contributions to the Paiutes have made her one of their most revered members over history. As I read this book I was in awe of how great of a woman Sarah must have been considering the time she lived and how priceless her stories are!

Sarah Winnemucca's story is told with a dry edge. The sufferings she and the Paiutes endure draw the reader in, but at the same time, the author creates a distance between her identity and the rest of the worlds'. Many details of her life are left out, primarily focusing on tribal activity, government oppression, and her own diverse involvements between the two. The book leaves one feeling depressed, yet intrigued by a flourishing curiosity. One can only read about death, rape, disease, and war so often in one text before the "guilt" sets in.
Life among the Piutes is exactly what anyone would expect given the history and culture. Part of what makes it such a good read is the initial expectation of readers from non-native or non-natively educated backgrounds. It provides a comfortable transition from stereotypical expectations to the deep truths, injustices, and cultures of American Indians. It's an easy read that tells the dark tale of one of many oppressed Native tribes and provokes a quest for knowledge thereafter; a vital tool for any person dealing with preconceived notions concerning an entire race of people with a thirst for truth.
