Anne Frank was born on June 12, 1929 in Frankfurt, Germany. For the first 5 years of her life, Anne lived with her parents, Otto and Edith, and older sister, Margot, in an apartment on the outskirts of Frankfurt. After Hitler s rise to power in 1933, the family moved to Amsterdam in the Netherlands to flee the increasing persecution of Jews in Germany. Seven years later, the German army occupied the Netherlands and the fragile peace of the Frank family was once again shattered.
By July 1942, the Nazi authorities in the Netherlands had received orders to deport Jews to concentration camps in German-occupied Poland. Anne and her family went into hiding in a secret attic apartment behind the office of Otto Frank s business. They were soon joined by four Jewish friends of the family. Several non-Jewish friends and colleagues of Otto Frank smuggled food and clothing to the secret annexe at great risk to their own lives.
On August 4, 1944, officials of the German secret police, the Gestapo, and their Dutch collaborators raided the hideout after being tipped off by an anonymous Dutch caller. The eight detainees were sent to Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland.
Selected for labour due to their youth, Anne and her sister, Margot were transferred to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in northern Germany in late October 1944. Both sisters died of typhus in March 1945, just a few weeks before British troops liberated Bergen-Belsen on April 15, 1945.
Anne's mother, Edith, died in Auschwitz in early January 1945. Only Anne's father, Otto, survived the war. Soviet forces liberated Otto at Auschwitz on January 27, 1945.
While in hiding, Anne kept a diary in which she recorded her fears, hopes, and experiences. Found in the secret apartment after the family was arrested, the diary was kept for Anne by Miep Gies, one of the people who had helped hide the Franks. After learning of Anne s death, she gave the diary to Otto Frank.
Since its first publication in 1947, the Diary has been translated into more than sixty languages and has become one of the most celebrated books of the 20th century. Through the diary of this Dutch schoolgirl, millions of readers around the world came to know personally one of Hitler's countless victims: an unfathomable and anonymous horror found a face.

An innocuous gift, a diary a girl treasures. She writes in it, "I will call you, Kitty." A scrawny teenage girl begins writing her way into the hearts and minds of mankind around the world. This book will be her legacy and her memorial.

Her family, refugees from Germany, immigrates to Holland where the boots of nazi oppression and psychopathic poison are not far behind. Ann's family hides from the invader in an attic where the Dutch who are the antithesis of German intolerance give them meager rations.

Ann's writing tells us about herself, and her relations with her family and the van Danns cramped in an attic always starving, and never being sure when they will be brought food, or if the police will find them. Through the turmoil of maturation from girl to woman,we learn of a girl's decency, innocence, and goodness.

All the hope for freedom is gone as the police discover the hide-out, and Ann is taken to a concentration camp where she dies two months before its liberation. Going back to the attic, her father finds her diary that will bring her immortality. Her legacy begins.

We all would have wanted to see Ann Frank and thousands of others like her live. No one, especially a young innocent girl should be treated so inhumanly without the least iota of mercy or decency. The irony is that her seemingly meaningless death among millions is what gave her life meaning, and allowed her story to be told to the world.

This book is a reminder that love and kindness survives the most vile lack of humanity. It is a testament to the human spirit.

A bright soul in a dark time

I have finally, at the age of 33, gotten around to reading Anne Frank's diary. There is little point in adding another glowing review. Everything has been said. But after reading some of the negative reviews, I feel compelled to respond. It seems there are two primary criticisms (Three if you count the ridiculous idea that the diary is a forgery, which I won't dignify). The first is that Anne doesn't talk a lot about the war or the holocaust. To this, I can only say, that's all for the better. She was a thirteen year girl living in total isolation from the rest of the world. She really had no special expertise or light to shed on these subjects. There are many excellent history books on both of these subjects. The second criticism is simply that the book is boring. She talks too much about her day to day life, her thoughts, her feelings, and so on. To this I can only say, what part of "Diary of a Young Girl" is ambiguous? The annex was her entire world. What do you expect her to write about?

What a few don't seem to understand is that this is not a "book about World War II", or even about the holocaust. If that is what she had written about, the diary wouldn't even be a footnote in history. This is the story of one young girl, in her own voice, trying to figure out what it means to live, to grow, and to be human in the most depraved and inhumane circumstances. She wrote about her hopes, her dreams, her fears, and occasionally about peeling potatoes. But the thing that some people don't see is that even when writing about the most mundane topics, she was actually writing about people, about how they endure and falter, about how they come together and how they fall apart. And despite the enormous injustice she endured, she always made the case for optimism, for hope in humanity, and for love of life. I don't know that I can agree with her, having adopted a more cynical outlook, but that just increases my admiration for her and my shame in myself for not living the gift of live to the fullest.

The other thing that stands out is the maturity of the writing. After reading just the first entry, I was blown away by the eloquence and clarity of Anne's writing. I could hardly believe that I was reading the prose of a 13 year old girl. She does write a lot about the trials and tribulations of being a teenage girl, but the voice of the writing does not feel childish at all, except perhaps in its optimism. The world lost a great talent and a brilliant soul to those murderous barbarians.

This is a difficult book to digest, and two days after finishing, I'm still haunted by it. Anne's optimism, faith, and courage inspired me throughout, but made the knowledge of what would come at the end all the more a bitter pill to swallow. All that we can do is to honor her by making sure her story and the story of millions of holocaust victims are never forgotten and never happen again. So far, we're not doing so well with that.

And there, I've done it. I've written a review. I didn't intend to, but I did. So go out and read it, if you haven't.

This is a large book. Not a pocket book.

The revised critical edidion was released from the Netherlands Institute for War and is the most comprehensive study of the diary. The first 195 pages, before the Diaries of Anne Frank (which is three editions of the diary. Her original journal, her manuscript as she edited it, and the popular story with her father's revisions)is a complete history of Anne Frank, starting with the pictures of young Anne and family. Then the horrifying arrest. Miep reported the final moments with the Franks. After "betrayal" the book tackles the question of how they were finally discovered after so long in hidding in the annex. So close to German defeat. Then the sadening story of "imprisonment and deportation". Included in this edition are the Tales "From the Secret Annex and Cady's Life." I found the work impressive, The extents to prove the legitemacy of the pages, the story and pictures, that completed the picture started by Anne from her diaries.

About the Author
Paul Bushkovitch is a Professor of History at Yale University, where he has taught for the past 36 years. He is the author of Peter the Great: The Struggle for Power, 1671-1725 (Cambridge University Press, 2001), Religion and Society in Russia: The Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries (1991) and The Merchants of Moscow, 1580-1650 (Cambridge University Press, 1980). His articles have appeared in the Slavic Review, the Russian Review, Jahrb�cher f�r Geschichte Osteruopas and Kritika. He is a member of the editorial board for the Cahier du Monde Russe.

Engaging read!

This is one of the most enjoyable and entertaining histories I have ever read. Although the author inflects his writing with no sensationalism or emotional subjectivism, he knows how to turn a phrase in a way which leaves the reader eager to see what happens next. Every time I finished a chapter, I just had to read the first page of the next chapter to get a hint of what was to come! The history reads very cohesively, and binds together like a "story." I definitely plan on reading this whole book again, just for pleasure (I originally read it for a course).

Do note that this is not like a typical textbook-- there are no bolded terms, no chapter outlines, no supplementary timelines of important events, etc. As I said above, it reads more like a novel.

Good history of Russia

Despite the many excellent works on Russian history, decent single volume surveys are few and far between. Geoffrey Hosking and Abraham Ascher both have written short histories of Russia that, while good, left one wanting more (I was not that enamored with Hosking's longer survey). This book is significantly longer than either of them, and does a good job narrating and explaining Russian history.

A Good Introduction Lacking Depth

A very good introduction covering many aspects of Russian history that are overlooked in more general accounts, but lacking depth overall. The shifts in the second half of the book between leader-centric, cultural, and imperialist chapters became distracting. In condensing the dense subject, the author seemed to lose the ability to be a storyteller, but nevertheless enticed an interest in finding more sources for specific eras.

Excellent way to get your feet soaking wet

I've just finished getting through a book on Lingo, and decided to pick this book up in the hopes of becoming an Actionscripter. The writing style of this book is excellent-- it wastes NO time with senseless conceptual jargony and gets straight to the point. You'll find yourself actually learning at a quick pace through a series of short examples of Actionscript that become more advanced and build on previous examples in the book. Better yet, the CD is packed full of open source examples for every short tutorial in the book.
This book is the definitive actionscript reference. Though, beginners be forewarned-- this is not a book for those who are not familiar with the fundamentals of programming and those who are not fully acquainted with Flash's interface and a conceptual understanding of animation.

Not JUST the best ever AS reference for designers...

I thought this would be a reference. Well guess what, I was wrong. This is a reference in the back half, but a How-To in the front half. I'd say, skip every other ActionScript book till you buy this one. If I'd known this would have tutorials in the first half (yes the first 400 or so pages are tutorials), I wouldn't have bought some of the other ones I have. Combined with the CD content, this book is a great first book for the intermediate animator moving into scripting. And, it will stay usefull for as long as you are using Flash MX. Between this book and the O'Reilly book "ActionScript for Flash MX: The Definitive Guide, Second Edition" by Colin Moock, you'll have all you really need. Then you can buy the specialized stuff on games or UI or whatever.

Worth every penny

Learn the basics; then practice what you have learned until you develop your unique style. Then pick up this book and take your flash movies to the next level.
Very good and clear explanations for learning action script. I picked this over Macromedia's advanced action scripting because the writing style is more my speed. I'm not a programmer and things are explained in a way where you understand and can apply and achieve results which gradually turn you into an actionscripter.
I'm a quarter of a way into the book; still practicing and developing my basic flash skills between three other books. You only need one for actionscripting and this is it![.]

Another awesome book from Loki Renard. I'm never disappointed. Spoiled Hollywood brat meets her match when she and her bodyguard are stranded in a remote forest and have to depend on each other to survive. Wonderful story line, explorations of the characters feelings and emotions, romance, danger and spanking.

I really enjoyed this suspenseful action adventure of Aster Wilder, daughter of a billionaire movie star and Owen Upham, an ex-military bodyguard with strong ideas about client discipline. Although Aster was very protected and raised away from Hollywood, her attitude has a nasty bite when provoked and unfortunately, she is very easily provoked. Zach Wilder never wanted his only child to be drawn into the Hollywood scene, but when she gets a role in a movie, filmed in New Zealand, he caves in with the stipulations of her having a bodyguard, Owen. The plot kept the pages turning, many times with laughter involving the antics of Aster and the dialog is definitely entertaining. Owen doesn’t let her get away with anything, and not afraid to take her in hand, and boy does he ever have to do that often. When these two are thrown together in a life and death situation, Owen’s experience and training keep them alive. Aster learns she is made of stronger stuff than she realized and holds her own. The steamy romance that develops between them adds a nice erotic element to this story.

I can't really say anything about this Volume without giving away spoilers regarding the events that take place. All I can tell readers of the manga to prepare for some incredible revelations regarding the characters, brilliantly executed plot-twists, and great insight into the World of Blood Lad. Essentially, this volume serves as a major turning point for the series.

This is volume 5, BUT it is volume 5 for the kindle. The downloaded version of Blood Lad is much smaller than the manga, which is why this says volume 5. If compared to the manga, it is what the third volume is.

Utterly Hopelessly Dreadful

The first half of the this volume is a major high-point in the story. Many of secrets of the past are brought to light and the anticipated confrontation that was insinuated in the previous volume unravels in a very unexpected way. The overall tone during this particular part of the story is one of futility and powerlessness. The second half of this volume feels like it completely breaks down the tone and tension in a way that I personally thought was perfect and kinda am not surprised by at this point (it's something that you should expect from this manga). The subtitle I would give to this volume would be: Our Lowest Point

Quels sont les secrets, prudemment gard�s, des personnes avec lesquelles nous partagions une vie? Quels sont les limites, et meme les profondeurs, de notre ignorance et naivet� si bien nourries? Quand le dernier cr�puscule tombe et d�daigne de s'attarder, qu'est-ce qu'il nous restera pour nous mener a bon fin? Sur quoi pourrons nous prodiguer les derniers de nos jours? Voila quelques unes des questions caverneuses qui s'ouvrent b�antes avant ceux qui lisent ce roman. L'h�roine est agr�able a l'exces, mais alors meme qu'on l'aime--et en fait on l'aime jusqu'a la fin--on commence a se demander si elle vraiment a toute sa tete. Est-elle en effet incapable d'�viter quelques unes des horreurs qui l'assaillent? Est-elle l'innocente victime de ceux qui d�cident son sort at qui l'ont cr�� comme elle est? Chose �trange, mais c'est possible que le personnage le plus attachant de ce roman c'est la demeure ancestrale, ou la plupart de l'action a lieu. Plant�e sur une falaise aupres d'Yport, au Pays de Caux en Haute Normandie, elle regarde la mer qu'il pleuve ou qu'il vente, aim�e par ses habitants, mais beaucoup desservie en fin de compte. Pourtant elle conna�t la t�nacit� et la mesure et sa place. Si seulement ceux qui s'abritent derriere ses murs pourraient apprendres de ses lignes, de son bon sens silencieux, de son ordre, de son repos.

Une histoire qui suit les r�ves et les aspirations d'une jeune femme de 17 ans jusqu'� ce qu'elle vieillisse. De son id�e de l'amour � son envie d'�tre m�re, de ses espoirs tendres aux d�sillusions les plus cruelles.
Jeanne est un personnage attachant qui nous pousse � r�fl�chir sur la vie et ce qu'elle nous offre.

What some dreams are made of !

Well written as one would expect from such a classical author.
A true to life story and a compelling easy read.
Even though sheltered from needs in terms of parents' love and money, one bad decision can change all of that overnight and shatter one's future.
The story highlights what some women have to endure whilst looking for happiness, including the abuse of a mother's unconditional love for her child.
Happy ending.
Quote " La vie, ca n'est jamais si bon ni si mauvais qu'on croit".

I love this book. I usually detest reading textbooks, but this textbook is reader friendly. It gives very up-to-date information, that is pertinent to today's issues of emergent bilinguals. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more on emergent bilinguals.
