In addition to formation processes, morphology also deals with physical properties, product performance, and the impact that process techniques have on properties. Understanding polymer morphology can ultimately help scientists achieve ideal properties and applications of polymeric materials.

With a focus on structure-property relationships, Polymer Morphology: Principles, Characterization, and Processing covers structure development, theory, simulation, and processing; and discusses a broad range of techniques and methods. The NSC is a semi-defined group—the president, vice president, secretaries of defense and state, national security adviser and staff, and other officials as needed—with the open-ended mission of helping the president decide and coordinate military and foreign policy. Its institutional vagueness makes it an ill-chosen framework for this engaging but unfocused study of postwar American policy making. Working from interviews with NSC members, Rothkopf, an academic and Clinton administration commerce official, examines the NSC's history from its 1947 inception onward, reviewing its performance in major foreign policy crises and tracing the rising influence of the NSA post. He delves into bureaucratic minutiae, but focuses on such "Shakespearean" human factors as the character and managerial style of the president and the personal "chemistry" and patronage networks among his cabinet and advisers. Rothkopf prefers a centrist, internationalist security policy, with experienced hands restraining ideologues; he therefore gives high marks to the NSC under Nixon, Carter and Bush 41, while castigating the Reagan and Bush 43 administrations. He presents a wealth of information, but the NSC's ad hoc purview, unstable structure and personality-driven dynamics make it hard to discern a coherent outline of American policy among its wranglings.

About the Author
David J. Rothkopf, a visiting scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, served as deputy under secretary of commerce during the Clinton Administration, as Chairman and CEO of Intellibridge Corporation, a provider of international analysis to the national security community, and as managing director of Kissinger Associates. A well-known commentator for leading newspapers and magazines, he has taught international relations at Columbia University; written, co-authored or edited five other books on international and information age themes; and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the President's Advisory Council of the U.S. Institute of Peace. He lives in Washington DC.

and to a great degree on the personalities of the individuals

Very well written, and from other material I've read, accurate. While it does not offer a favorable accounting of White House performance, it does offer a more realistic perspective than anyone depending on mass media for information can understand. What should be noticed by novice readers is that the context for decisions follows a trend created by earlier decisions, and to a great degree on the personalities of the individuals. Important positions in decision-making depend as much on such personalities as on constitutional precepts. Details seem to be left to the reader to pursue, but for anyone wanting to "look behind the curtain," the book is a must read. I enjoyed reading it.

Very interesting perspectives into decision making and the way in which political necessities get in the way of enlightened policy design. Fascinating insights into the acceleration of history and how it forces decisions with less thoughtfulness than one would hope.

About the Author
David Paitson was the President and General Manager of the Columbus Chill from 1991-98 and a career sports business executive. Paitson has worked in public relations and marketing capacities with the Indiana Pacers (NBA), the Columbus Blue Jackets (NHL), and as President of the Columbus Destroyers (AFL). He currently works as Associate Athletic Director at Sam Houston State University. He and his wife, Lauren, currently reside in Montgomery, Texas.
Craig Merz, a lifelong Columbus, Ohio, resident, has witnessed the evolving Columbus sports scene from the stands and the press box, including a quarter century of reporting for the "Columbus Dispatch." He has covered the Stanley Cup Finals, the NHL All-Star Game and Entry Drafts, as well the NCAA Frozen Four. Merz currently is a freelance writer for the "Associated Press," MLSsoccer.com, "Buckeye Sports Bulletin," and "Columbus Monthly" among others.

Chill Factor recounts the story of the Columbus Chill an ECHL franchise that called Columbus home from 1991-1999. Now Columbus had already experienced its’ share of professional sports face plants and when the Chill debuted in 1991, they were expected to be just another flash in the pan for a city dominated by Ohio State football. Yet, by employing a team of sports mavericks and more than a little ingenuity and outside the box [diplomatic way of saying crazy] ways of promoting itself, the Chill began to show the world that professional sports was viable in Columbus.

It was far from a perfect journey as the team had to deal with arena issues, backlash from conservative types who were put off by the teams’ brash ways, skepticism among long term residents and resistance to a professional sports franchise from Ohio State just to name a few. This book is a terrific read for the sports marketer and the sports fan alike. Great book, great memories, and great photos (you might be in it!)

This book is a fantastic read! I have really enjoyed it thoroughly. I am not an avid reader, but I finished this in two sittings.

David Paitson brought back a lot of great memories and sheds light on a lot of what was going on behind the scenes. There were a lot of things that went wrong or almost went wrong with the Chill, and it is a lot of fun to hear about the experience from Mr Paitson's insider point of view.

What they did with the Chill in Columbus was truly unique and impressive from a lot of perspectives, not just the on-ice product. I am grateful for all of the memories (and Fairground Coliseum smells) which this book evoked.

I also found myself laughing a lot while reading this book. Sometimes, I laughed because I learned something funny and new. Other times, I laughed because I remember the experience/event/promo so fondly or was reminded of ones I nearly forgot. This was a fantastic trip down memory lane, and I got a bonus when I found a picture of my sister, dad, grandfather, and myself cheering in the stands.

How to miss an open net

As a Chill season ticket holder from Day One through Last Call and a part of the now infamous Issue 1 arena campaign, I was very excited to read this account of the team's history. While it certainly brought back many fond memories, overall it was a disappointing and meandering read. The worst part is, it really didn't need to be that way. Even a mediocre editor would have shaped this into a much more worthy chronicle of how a minor league hockey team actually did change a city forever.

There is no denying the tremendous impact the Columbus Chill had on the city of Columbus, nor David Paitson's role in all of it. It's also not a stretch to say that without the Chill, Columbus would likely not have the NHL's Blue Jackets or an Arena District. The problem is, Paitson repeats this and many other things ad nauseum in a book that probably should be about 75 pages shorter and a whole lot cleaner. Paitson was a tremendous marketer and leader, but he's clearly no writer. One would hope co-author Craig Merz of the Columbus Dispatch, or at least an editor somewhere, would have fixed some of this, but alas. Multiple typesetting errors at the very beginning of this book only foreshadow how sloppy the rest will be. With very little continuity, barely legible reproductions of the Chill's oft-referenced and all-important print ad campaigns, typographical errors, the lack of an Index, unnecessary repetition and the self-congratulatory tone of it all, this book does not do justice to subject matter of such great potential. I'll give it 3 stars rather than 2, but it should have been the hockey equivalent of a slam dunk.

Basics, plus often overlooked stereo-binaural techniques

It's a shame that this book is out of print. Few other "microphone..." books cover types and usage as clearly as Mr. Bartletts'.

A reader can easily find about 70% of the information from other sources, including mixed/wrong information for "free" from web postings. The trick is effective incorporation into your application. Having this volume tucked into a kit bag is a smart way to upgrade your skills or remind yourself of an infrequently used technique.

Kenneth Haynes is Assistant Professor in the Department of Comparative Literature at Brown University. He is co-editor of Horace in English (Penguin 1996) and of the first scholarly editions of two major works by Swinburne (forthcoming from Penguin). He is also co-editor, with Peter France, of The Oxford History of Literary Translation in English, Volume 4: 1790-1890 (forthcoming).
