The Danish government accepted the occupation, but a small group of teen boys, angry at their nation's cowardice, formed the secret Churchill Club to resist the Germans and conducted a six-month spree of sabotage and destruction. Incorporating lengthy first-person reminiscences of one of the group's leaders, Knud Pedersen, Hoose describes how the club recruited members, exploited their youth and innocent looks to deceive their parents and the Germans, appropriated weapons, and carried out guerilla-style attacks from their bicycles. Although the boys were eventually arrested and imprisoned, their exploits made them national heroes, shamed many adults, and fueled Danish resistance. After the war, Winston Churchill honored their efforts. The book is well organized, effectively integrating Pedersen's vivid descriptions of his group's motives, determination, and sometimes foolhardy bravery within the larger narrative, which includes information about Denmark, the war, and the boys' families and lives. About the Author
Phillip Hoose is an award-winning author of books, essays, stories, songs and articles. Although he first wrote for adults, he turned his attention to children and young adults in part to keep up with his own daughters. His book Claudette Colvin won a National Book Award and was dubbed a Publisher's Weekly Best Book of 2009. He is also the author of Hey, Little Ant, co-authored by his daughter, Hannah, It’s Our World, Too!, The Race to Save the Lord God Bird, and We Were There, Too!, a National Book Award finalist. He has received a Jane Addams Children’s Book Award, a Christopher Award, and a Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, among numerous honors. He was born in South Bend, Indiana, and grew up in the towns of South Bend, Angola, and Speedway, Indiana. He was educated at Indiana University and the Yale School of Forestry. He lives in Portland, Maine.

A rude awakening

I'm a second generation American and Half Dane from my mother's side. My grandfather was from Nibe as well as my grandmother. On my father's side I am German. I was born in 1933 and too young to be aware of the surrender of the Danes to the occupation of Denmark. My family was silent in the years that followed, so when I chose to read this book, I was shocked to learn of the Danish attitude regarding the Nazis.
I have great admiration for the young men and women with the courage it took to stand up to their countrymen and try to make a difference. It is this kind of heroism that makes me proud of my heritage.
I found this book to be very enlightening and an easy read.

WWII non-fiction Lone Star award book

Readers of WWII fiction and non-fiction will love this less known story of Danish rebellion as Hitler stormed across Europe. Phillip Hoose tells of private school teens who grew tired of watching their countrymen just accept the presence of Nazi soldiers and Hitler's laws and began to strike back, starting with small acts of defiance and ending with outright sabotage that inspires a country to take action. Written in a more narrative style, even readers who avoid non-fiction will enjoy this action-packed book. Recommended for grades 6-adult

Interesting Historical Account

This is a really interesting book about a little-known group of heroes in World War II. It is the story of the "Churchill Club," a group of teen boys living in occupied Denmark who conducted sabotage and harassment of the Germans in their town. The main character, Knud Pedersen, is interviewed by the author and much of the book comes from his first-hand accounts. I really enjoyed reading about how these boys took a stand against the Nazis in WWII Denmark.

"Collector's Item" segues from spy novels, to a psychological profile of Cambridge spy Kim Philby, secret agent for Moscow, to an analysis of how espionage becomes a mutually destructive game. It is unfortunate that Brodsky (former poet laureate of the United States) would release a literary work with so much potential and so much disappointment. True, this collection represents some of Brodsky's most engaging insights. Pieces like the title essay represents his supreme talents as a writer; "On Grief and Reason" reveals the sagacity of Brodsky's mind by offering the reader a new way of looking at the poetry of Robert Frost through two of Frost's poems, "Come In" and "Burial." Brodsky puts Frost alongside the Virgil of the Eclogues and the Georgics. But most of the other essays fail to demonstrate the richness one expects of Brodsky's writing, e.g., his 1987 Nobel Prize acceptance speech, which lacks literary merit. Apart from having survived it, we were richly provided with stuff to romanticize" ), or giving a commencement address, as in "In Praise of Boredom," a metaphysical litany of warning and assurance to a graduating class ("Everything that displays a pattern is pregnant with boredom" ), Brodsky shows an extraordinary flair for language. His keen and passionate poet's mind often homes in on unexpected details, as in "Alter Ego," a short dissertation on the poet and the subject of love. Brodsky's spectrum on life and art at the end of the century is as wide and varied as his talent for writing. To read these masterful essays is to experience the English language at its finest. Practical book on time series econometrics

I am a Financial Engineer working primarily in risk management. Over the past few months I've had to study up on time series-related topics (both GARCH and cointegration-based analyses). This book is excellent for someone who needs to find time-series information and then apply it to a problem in a hurry. The explanations are clear and intuitive, yet mathematically precise. There are plenty of examples on how to apply techniques to real world problems, including lucid discussions of the proper statistical tests to use for the various methodologies.

Like many engineers, I often find myself scrambling to find a good source for a model or system component I will have to design, usually under tight time constraints. This is a perfect example of the type of textbook I always hope to find when starting such a task.

Quite good but...

OK, the book is not that bad, it explains the theory clearly BUT it is "applied" and there is no solutions to the exercise books in the authors webpage (although they do include the data sets for the exercises). I know it's common nowadays to edit books with math exercises without a solutions manual (or at least a pdf file online) but it doesn't change anything.

So yes, it's a good book to read, but how will you be sure you understood what you've read if you can practice it?

Second, besides Enders makes things in simple way, the explanation is "digest-able" for people with less background in math or linear algebra and for those who eagerly want to know what time series really is. Third, Enders's book is an oasis for people who devote his/her life for research, and also for academic world as well as graduate students. I Just Can't Get Enough of This Series!!

Oh my dear Anie Michaels, I'm starting to think that you could write a grocery list and I'd want to read it. Private Getaway picks up right where Private Encounters finishes, so we don't miss a moment in all the delicious angst and roller coaster feelings. For someone who has hated serials since she discovered them, I am certainly hooked and starting to be made a believer!

“Just because I can’t see your sand, doesn’t mean it’s any less important than mine.”

The thing I loved about this installment was that readers really got to see this whole other side to Lena. She was no longer the housewife waiting to get what was owed to her. She's forced to become independent and not lean on anyone from support. We find her starting over from square one but it felt special. It felt like this woman was maturing and growing in a way because she had no other choice. Furthermore, I absolutely adored that she didn't just crumple into a heap when something happened. She thought through everything and really trusted her own gut. I also love the introductions to her friends that we got. In a way, it showed the type of woman she is which endeared me to her character even further.

“I wanted to save you, to be with you, to help you. But I also wanted to give myself to you. I wanted everything with you.”

Once the book got rolling, I pretty much figured out what the end game was, but appreciated the journey nonetheless. It's hard to write the review without giving any spoilers, but I can say that I enjoyed this one immensely. Where the previous books were about Lena with someone else and the woman they shaped her to be, Private Getaway was all about the relationship she forms with herself. Normally, I stay clear of the serials but Michaels creates such natural ups and downs in the greater arc that it creates a naturalistic flow of breaks, making the serial a very organic one. Most of all, I’m thanking Michaels for not writing a nasty cliffhanger like the previous book, but definitely intrigued to where she'll take us next!

The ending is my favorite part!

I was given a copy of this book by the author for an honest review.

I've really enjoyed reading these serials. in this third installment we find Lena on her own in Hawaii looking for a fresh start. Feeling like a fool for marrying her husband and falling in love with a liar - her PI. Lots of twists and turns in these books. For this third one - what really did it for me for the five stars is the ending.

Before we get there we have to work through Lena making a couple of friends and finding a new job. This is a tedious process as she's learning to trust and live a little. The money she has to live off of is not going to last forever and she's willing to start and the bottom and work way up. Something she's never had to do before.

There's a few surprises for Lena during this story. Again, the ending is my favorite part. I am looking forward to seeing what comes next for Lena. She's a tough cooking. She's struggled a bit but kept her chin up which is more than some can say if they'd experienced their whole world dropping out from under them.

LOVE LOVE LOVE

I am starting off with AAAH why can't I give more than 5 stars?!? I love this series so much! I love Lena and I want to be her friend! I was so peed off at the end of Encounters, I mean really? Why'd you go there Anie?!? But of course she redeemed herself in this book. Lena just needs to move on and just when she thinks she can her world is turned upside down AGAIN!! I was reading so dang fast, I needed her to be happy, to get over the heartache of douche bag men.I knew something was going to happen..Preston needed to come out on the other side but how the heck was he gonna do that? I am so anxious to see what happens to Derrek. Anie did a fantastic job grabbing at me in and making me feel like I was a part of the story, like I was sitting right there with Lena and her friends. I can't wait to read what happens to everyone and hope that revenge is served. LOVED THIS BOOK!!
